Awareness Raising

To respond to the FGM challenge, HIRDA has fought an aggressive awareness campaign against FGM for the last seven years. HIRDA believes that it is possible to reduce the prevalence of FGM within two to three generations. Through activities and workshops on FGM we draw the attention of the community on the issue and empower the local community to change their behavior towards FGM.z6.png

Hosted by our partners or by HIRDA Women Empowerment Centres, the workshops raise awareness on the negative consequences of FGM. One of the lessons we learned throughout the previous campaigns against FGM, was that reduction of FGM in Somali society was hampered by lack of support from men. The involvement of men in tackling the challenge is critical because an important reason for circumcision is for men to accept a woman for marriage. At the same time, at the very outset of the awareness campaign against FGM, HIRDA has engaged the religious scholars, community elders and youth leaders to use their support in the campaign, which we believe is a powerful tool in our campaign.
