Universal TV agreed to sign a contract with HIRDA

In September HIRDA and Universal TV, an online Somali broadcasting network, signed a contract which allows HIRDA to broadcast short film clips on FGM.

Universal Television was established in 2005 with the primary aim to fill the information gap and provide reliable news and quality television programmes to the global Somali community. Being the first and the largest Somali TV satellite network of its kind, it is an important bridge linking the large and influential Somali Diaspora with developments taking place at their home front. Given the wide reach of Universal TV among both the Diaspora as well as in Somalia, this partnership will support HIRDA in reaching a wider population internationally.

HIRDA believes that by addressing the issue through a big medium such as Universal TV, we can reach also those who have always been able to turn a blind eye to this practice. Being a popular broadcasting network, the fact that Universal TV is also sending out this message is an important step in changing the perspective of people towards FGM. The film clips will be broadcasted in 2012, see http://tvuniversal.tv
