6 February, International day of zero tolerance to FGM day

On February 6th, HIRDA Somalia organized a meeting in Mogadishu for women organisations to celebrate the sixth international day of Zero Tolerance to FGM day. On February 6, 2003, the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, made the official declaration on "Zero Tolerance to FGM" in Africa during an international conference in Ethiopia. Ever since, Somali women gather on February 6th to commemorate this day.

This year, 30 Somali women organizations gathered from and around Mogadishu to exchange ideas on FGM, and experiences with campaigning against FGM. These meetings serve as valuable meetings for the strengthening of women networks which HIRDA highly stimulates. HIRDA Mogadishu took the opportunity of the meeting to discuss other gender-related issues and addressed women empowerment, women political participation and gender-based violence and how these interrelated issues can be approached more coherently.
